Employment in Turkiye

Minimum wages and salaries

  • The minimum gross wage in Turkey is 20.002,50 TRY per month.


Probation periods

  • Probation periods are allowed in employment contracts and can be determined for a maximum of two months.

  • The period which exceeds the maximum statutory period of two months is not deemed as probation.

  • During the probation period, the employee and the employer can terminate the contract without a notice period and compensation.

  • The probation period can be extended to a maximum of four months in collective employment agreements.

  • There is no action needed to continue employment upon passing the probation period.

 

Bonuses

  • Both contractual and discretionary bonuses are possible in Turkiye.

 

Termination and Severance Considerations

  • Both the employees and the employers party to an open-ended employment contract are required to notify each other prior to the termination in accordance with the notice periods determined by the Turkish labor law.

  • The duration of the notice period is based on the employee’s seniority—the period during which the employee was employed by the same undertaking.

Maternity leave

  • Female employees are entitled to 16 weeks of paid maternity leave. This 16-week leave has to be taken eight weeks before delivery and the remaining eight weeks after delivery.

  • In case of multiple pregnancy, two more weeks are added to the eight-week period of not working before delivery.

  • During the maternity leave period 66.6% of the daily earnings of the workers are paid. This fee is covered by the Social Security Institution.

Partner leave

  • Fathers are entitled to 5 days of paid leave. 

 

Vacation and annual leave

  • In Turkiye, annual paid leave is given to workers who have worked at the workplace for at least one year, including the probationary period, from the day they started to work.

  • The duration of the leave depends on the seniority of a worker. The total length of this annual leave is at least:

    • 14 working days for workers with 1 to 5 years of service,

    • 20 working days for workers with 6 to 14 years of service,

    • 26 working days for workers with more than 15 years of service,

    • 20 working days for employees under the age of 18 and over the age of 50, regardless of the length of service.

Sick leave

  • Employees subject to an injury due to a workplace accident are entitled to receive payments from the Social Security Institution due to temporary incapacity to work on the same principles as sick pay.  

  • While sickness benefit is 67% of the daily income for treatment in outpatient clinics, it is 50% of the daily income for those receiving treatment in the hospital..

Average workweek hours

  • Normal working hours do not exceed 45 hours per week.

 

Overtime considerations

  • Overtime cannot exceed 270 hours per year.

  • Overtime pay is calculated according to the employee's normal working hours.
